Dr. Karen Roland Douglass believes every wound can reveal a calling. In her powerful new book, The Purpose in the Pain, she draws from both personal experience and professional expertise to help readers unearth the roots of emotional trauma, confront limiting beliefs, and step into lives marked by hope, resilience, and purpose.
Through her writing, she aims to illuminate the path from suffering to self-discovery, showing that within every pain lies the potential for transformation and freedom.
Dr. Douglass has dedicated her life to working with children and families. She has worked with children and adults in the social services and mental health field for over 30 years. Dr. Douglass received her doctorate in clinical psychology from Adler University and a master’s degree in psychopharmacology from the Chicago School of Professional Psychology in 2020. She is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist in Illinois, Indiana, Arizona, and California. Dr. Douglass has held key leadership positions in both the public and private sectors.
While employed with the City of Chicago Department of Public Health, Dr. Douglass developed and implemented the first Child and Adolescent Program at the Chatham-Avalon Mental Health Center. She recently retired from her roles as a tenured Instructor of Psychology at City Colleges of Chicago and as the Director of the Kennedy King College Wellness Center. She is the founder of GileadHeals Ministries and CEO of Gilead Behavioral Health, a small community mental health clinic in the Chatham-Avalon Community.
In addition, Dr. Douglass collaborates with her brother, Dr. Donald Roland, MD, a pain psychologist specializing in pain management. She also conducts benefit evaluations for military servicemen and women. She has traveled nationally and internationally to raise awareness about the intersection of spirituality and mental health within the Christian community.
As an active member of the Apostolic Faith Church, for over 40 years, she has conducted training, seminars, and curriculum development for the Spiritual Facilitator Ministry. She has also served as an altar worker and co-leader of research for the Health Profession Ministry. Serving passionately on the PAW International Wayfarers Auxiliary, the Committee on Health, Education, and Wellness (CHEW), and the Department of Transformational Leadership.
